We do NOT have to lose our minds or memories as we age. In this article, I’ll be talking about seven supplements that I’ve found to be helpful in supporting memory, cognition, and mental clarity.
The supplements which I’ve found make a night and day difference for me include:
PHOSPHATIDYL SERINE, OR PS
- A fatty compound that protects plays a key role in energy production and communication between our neurons.
- PS is abundant in the brain when we’re young, but becomes depleted as we age. When we’re young, high levels of PS are found in the hippocampus (a structure in the brain responsible for learning and memory).
- I take 400 Mg of PPS, I’ve taken Jarrow PS in the past and I still like it, but the brand I’m currently taking is Nutricost.
- If I had to take just one supplement for memory, it would be PS. But I’ve found that it works best for me if I take it along with six other supplements.
SUNFLOWER LECITHIN.
- Lecithin is rich in acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that helps store and retrieve memories. I like having it in my bloodstream at the same time as the PS and other brain-supportive nutrients in this stack.
- I take 4 to 8 grams of lecithin a day.
- NUMBER THREE: KRILL OIL. Krill oil is rich in two omega 3 fatty acids, or n-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA. The phospholipids in krill oil transport the EPA and DHAdirectly into all of our cells and organs, including the brain.
- According to a 2015 study, taking krill oil resulted in “enhanced absorption of n-3 fatty acids into target organs such as heart, brain and liver”. I take 4 grams of Bronson’s antarctic krill oil a day.
FISH OIL
- About 40% of the human brain is made up of DHA, making it essential for neurological functioning. EPA has been shown to support both mood and memory.
- Krill oil has some DHA, but there’s more in fish oil. To enhance absorption, I take it along with the krill oil.
- If you take fish oil, it’s important to choose a brand that has high purity.
B12, B6 AND FOLATE
High levels of homocysteine have been linked to memory loss and cognitive impairment in older people.
- This supplement contains three vitamins which are effective in lowering homocysteine.
- I take two chewable tablets of Jarrow Formulas B12, B6 and Folate supplement. I sometimes take Solar’s liquid B12 instead.
NMN.
- NMN has many functions in the body; one is to reduce inflammation in the brain.
- A 2019 study found that NMN can improve recall and reduce forgetfulness by increasing synaptic plasticity and that it can help with the regeneration of neurons in the hippocampus.
MULTIVITAMIN/MINERAL
Not medical advice
This article is not intended as, and should not be taken as, medical advice. I’m not advising that people eat any particular diet or take any particular supplement(s), just reporting on what I’m doing. Supplements, like medications and other interventions, can have side effects; I would encourage people to research both possible benefits and side effects before starting on any supplementation regimen, and consult with a medical professional about any issues which might have a medical component.
